The Pittsburgh Steelers are one of the oldest franchises in the history of the National Football League (NFL). The Pittsburgh Steelers were established as Pittsburgh Pirates in 1933 and renamed themselves as the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1940.The Steelers did not enjoy much success in the NFL before the NFL-AFL merger in 1970.
