That's all from our end for the day. Hope you had a great time with us here. Do join us for the second ODI between India and Australia on Sunday (February 19).

21:04 (IST)17 MAR 2023

India stand-in skipper Hardik Pandya speaks after match
Absolutely, we were under pressure wile bowling and batting but we kept our composure and were able to comeback. Once we got the momentum, we knew we could do well. Jaddu did what he was supposed to do. We all knew what he can do and coming back after 8 months, he partnered KL really well and helped the team really well. Enjoyed my bowling, it was really hot. Enjoyed the batting too, would've loved to take the side over the line but the way Jaddu and KL did it it was amazing to watch it from the outside

21:04 (IST)17 MAR 2023

Australia stand-in skipper Steve Smith speaks after match
We weren't expecting when we walked to Wankhede, usually good scoring ground. India bowled pretty well, the way the ball swung around but credit to India. KL and Jadeja's partnership took the game away from us. We started pretty well, Mitch started off well, kept going but we lost too many wickets and didn't get ourselves good partnership but Jadeja and Rahul showed how it's done. May be 260 or 270 was par, ball was swung even after 30 odd overs for both the teams but just didn't have enough runs on the board. Just one partnership needed, we could've slogged in the end, wasn't to be in the end.

21:03 (IST)17 MAR 2023

KL Rahul speaks after his match-winning knock
KL Rahul: When I came in, three wickets were down and Starc was was swinging the ball, it's tough when he does that. Not really thinking about the runs, just wanted to play normal cricket shots and not searching for runs and along with that picked up a couple of boundaries and that helped calm my nerves. Whoever I batted with, Shubman, Hardik and Jadeja. The talk was really with not really get into the shell, just try to be positive and try to keep the scoreboard moving. The minute left-hander walked in, there were loose balls on offer, that can happen to any bowler but Jaddu batted well, runs fast and puts the pressure on the fielders. When we started off, we didn't really think the pacers would be in play but Shami was brilliant. I enjoy wicket-keeping, slow and low today, it's a challenge but I enjoy playing here.

Match Summary
Mitchell Starc smoked fire with three big wickets of Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav and Shubman Gill. India were reduced to 39 for 4 at one stage before Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul forged to put some runs.

They were somehow successful to put the Australians at bay. Hardik departed in the quest of playing the pull shot against Marcus Stoinis. KL Rahul married the calmness on the pitch and ensured to keep the one end intact.

The Karnataka player repeated his determined knock at Eden Gardens against Sri Lanka a couple of months back as both situations demanded patience and grit at the same time.

Rahul did just that by showing his solid defence, rotating the strikes sensibly and cashing on the right deliveries. He found an able ally in Ravindra Jadeja as the stitched an unbroken 108-run stand to steer India to the target with more than 10 overs remaining.

Earlier in the game, Mitchell Marsh (81 runs off 65 balls) set the platform for the visitors through his blitzkrieg but his wicket paved the way for India to bounce back in the innings. Australia crumbled from 129/2 to 188/10 in 35.4 overs.

Mohammed Shami (3/17), Mohammed Siraj (3/29), Ravindra Jadeja (2/46) and a wicket each from Kuldeep Yadav and Hardik Pandya helped India to pull off things back to its ways.
