The Purple Cap is one of the most prestigious awards in the Indian Premier League, presented to the bowler with the highest number of wickets in the tournament.
It is undoubtedly a huge achievement for any bowler as the title not only showcases your sheer determination throughout the championship, but also places you as a brilliant bowler in the T20 format because of the level of cricket displayed in the league.
Hence, it's like a golden ticket for bowlers to come into the eyes of the right people and accelerate their cricketing career. The competition has seen some exceptional performances from individuals who won the Purple Cap at the end of the season.
For the first time since its inception. The award earned a title sponsor in the form of Saudi Aramco last year. Rajasthan Royals’ leggie Yuzvendra Chahal bagged the first-ever Aramco Purple Cap with 27 wickets in 17 matches which was the first time he won this title in his IPL career.
As far as records are concerned, former CSK all-rounder Dwayne Bravo and RCB fast bowler Harshal Patel share the top spot for most wickets in a season of IPL with 32 scalps.
Bravo retired from the championship after playing his last the previous season. He will join CSK as their Bowling Coach in the upcoming season. On the other hand, Harshal Patel will play for RCB this season too.
This year, we have some really exciting prospects playing in the 10 franchises and it’ll be one tough fight for the Purple Cap. Another interesting thing to look out for would be the number 32, can any bowler breach this mark in the 2023 IPL and surpass Bravo’s as well as Harshal’s record?
The Purple Cap is a special prize in IPL given to the bowler who picks up the most number of wickets. The Purple Cap race officially starts after all franchises have played one game each.
Purple Cap holders change as the season progresses, and the player who has the most wickets in IPL 2022 after the final takes the prestigious prize home.
All bowlers aim to win the Purple Cap in IPL once in their careers, but not everyone is able to accomplish the feat. To win the Purple Cap, a bowler needs to pick up wickets consistently.
Scalping more than one wicket in every game ensures that a bowler is ahead in the race to win the Purple Cap. Players who are inconsistent generally finish in the bottom half of the race.
The IPL 2023 is yet to kickstart. Hence, there is no highest wicket-taker in the competition as of now.
Yuzvendra Chahal from Rajasthan Royals is the current Purple Cap holder as he finished with 27 wickets in the IPL 2022 and won the award.
5 Indians have won the Purple Cap in the IPL. They are RP Singh (2009), Pragyan Ojha (2010), Mohit Sharma (2014), Bhuvneshwar Kumar (2016 and 2017) and Harshal Patel (2021).
The benefits of being a Purple Cap holder is that more people know about a bowler’s talent, especially when the player is uncapped. Purple Cap holders also get to wear a special cap while fielding for their franchise.
Last year, the Purple Cap winner additionally received a prize money of INR 10 lakh.
The only uncapped player to win the Purple Cap in IPL history is Harshal Patel. He won the award in 2021, picking up 32 wickets in 15 matches.
No, Super Over wickets are not considered for calculation of Purple Cap.
Many legendary all-rounders have played in the IPL, but not a single player has held the Orange Cap and the Purple Cap simultaneously in the same season.
