About IPL 2023
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the schedule of the 16th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) on February 17. Defending champions Gujarat Titans will take on MS Dhoni's Chennai Super Kings on March 31 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
Schedule for IPL 2023 is out now. Click here to check IPL 2023 complete schedule
The tournament format will be similar to the one played last year with the home and away formats returning for the league stage.
IPL History and Format

The Indian Premier League was initiated in the year 2008 by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Eight teams participated in the inaugural season and soon it extended to a 10-team tournament in 2011.
However, there were only nine teams playing in the fifth season of IPL 2012 as Kochi Tuskers Kerala was terminated after failing to pay its annual bank guarantee. The BCCI terminated Pune Warriors India in October 2013 on similar grounds to that of the now-defunct Kochi franchise.
The tournament, hence, was back to its eight-team event in IPL 2014. Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals were suspended for two seasons after their officials were found guilty in betting and spot-fixing activities.
Gujarat Lions and Rising Pune Supergiant replaced CSK and RR for the 2016 and 2017 seasons. The two teams returned to IPL after completing their suspension in 2018 and eventually the contracts of GL and RPS ended.
The BCCI added two more teams to reinstate the 10-team tournament structure after 11 years in 2022.
As of IPL 2023, each team will play 14 matches in the group stage, including seven at their home and seven away. The 10 teams are categorically divided into two groups. Each team will play the teams of opposite groups twice and once against the teams of their own group.

What's New in IPL 2023
-
Home and Away Format Returns
-
Impact Player Rule
-
Teams to play double matches with opposite group
-
Return of Star England all-rounders
The T20 extravaganza will return to its original format before the Covid-19 pandemic. Teams playing at home and away venues will return to IPL 2023 after it was suspended in the rage of Covid-19 outbreak.
The IPL 2020 was completely held in the United Arab Emirates. The first phase of IPL 2021 was held in a few cities of India before it was moved to the UAE amid the second wave of Covid-19. The group stage of IPL 2022 was held in Mumbai and Pune cities of Maharashtra and the playoffs games were staged in Kolkata and Ahmedabad.
The BCCI has introduced the Impact Player rule from IPL 2023 onwards. According to the rule, a team will name four substitute players along with their playing XI before the toss.
The team can replace only one of the four named substitute players on the list with any player in the main XI. Both teams have the option of replacing one player as an ‘Impact Player’ before the completion of the 14th over in either innings of the match.
Either the captain, head coach or the manager of the team should inform the on-field umpires or the fourth umpire regarding the introduction of the Impact Player before the 14th over in any innings. It should be noted that there is no mandate to follow the Impact Player rule for a team and it is very optional to use according to their own benefit.
A batting side can reveal the Impact Player at the fall of a wicket or during the innings break, while a bowler can bowl his full quota of four overs once replaced as an Impact player with respect to full 20-over innings
An Impact Player can be introduced in case any of the players from the team suffers an injury but only after the completion of an over. An injured player won’t be permitted to take part further in the game once replaced by an ‘Impact Player’. In case a player happens to retire hurt, the Impact Player will be eligible to bat after the completion of an over and only 11 players can bat as per the rule.
Unlike in IPL 2023, teams will play twice only from the opposite groups. For instance, Mumbai Indians, which is clubbed in Group A, will play only once against teams from the same group but will play two times against teams of Group B in the group stage.
England all-rounders Sam Curran and Ben Stokes are among top three expensive picks in the history of IPL auction. Curran and Stokes were sold to Punjab Kings and Chennai Super Kings for a lucrative price of INR 18.50 crore and INR 16.25 crore, respectively, in the 2023 IPL auction.
Both the players, who were part of England's T20 World Cup winning side, missed IPL 2022 due to various reasons. Stokes didn't participate in the mega auction to focus on county cricket in a bid to revamp England's Test cricket. Curran, on the other hand, was in the process of rehabilitation from a back injury at that point.
